The Hardin County Sheriff's Office is tasked with providing law enforcement protection to the residents of the approx. 470 square miles of Hardin County. That includes all incorporated areas of the county as well. The Sheriff is the chief law enforcement officer in the county.
Sheriff Craig Leeth employs a full-time staff of twenty-five. The administrative staff consists of the Sheriff, Chief Deputy and a Lieutenant. The road patrol division consists of three supervising Sergeants and nine deputies. The Detective division at the Sheriff's Office consists of a supervising Detective Sergeant/Polygraph Examiner and a Detective/Crime Scene Technician.
Keeping it all organized and things running smoothly are the three full-time and two part-time communications officers.
The Sheriff also maintains a five-day jail facility with a work release program. Maintaining the jail facility is a supervising corrections officer and three corrections officers.
Also incorporated into the Sheriff's duties are providing a full-time deputy for courthouse security and providing a full-time deputy to work in conjunction with the Child Support Enforcement Agency.
Hardin County 911 is also located at the Sheriff's Office and the dispatchers work closely with the Sheriff's Communications Officers.
To compliment the full time staff the Sheriff also employs on an as needed basis 18 special deputies. The specials are an essential part of the Sheriff's Office, increasing the capabilities of the Sheriff's Office to handle multiple situations at any point in time.
As the challenges of law enforcement continue to increase and change, so does the Hardin Co. Sheriff's Office.
The sheriff has implemented many new programs in the past two years and continues to look for new and better ways of providing a quality service to the citizens of Hardin County.
One of the challenges to law enforcement was met by the Sheriff when he formed a new Special Response Team to deal with the high risk situations which have become so prevalent in our society today.
Other areas of improvement have been updated equipment for use by his staff. An increased road patrol division has also been instrumental in reduction crime in the county.
The sheriff has been a very big supporter of continuing education of his staff, which directly relates to better crime fighting in Hardin County.
Looking forward to the future is of the utmost importance to the Sheriff's  Office. There are many programs that are in infancy stages but will be implemented as soon as the programs are constructed and funded.
These include the addition of a School Resource Officer to attend the ever-important issues of our young citizens.
Increased staffing is always an important issue to consider as well as increased training.
The courts of the county also charge the Sheriff's office with serving official paper that are issued. As is transporting of all prisoners to and from the Hardin County courts as they request. Also involved in the civil division are court ordered Sheriff's sales of real estate and writs of execution. The Chief Deputy and Lieutenant oversee these tasks.
